Rahul Gandhi Press Conference Today, First Since Disqualification As MP

Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will this afternoon hold his first press conference after being disqualified from the Lok Sabha. The presser is scheduled at 1 pm, reported NDTV.

Mr. Gandhi lost his MP status after a Gujarat court found him guilty in a criminal defamation case and sentenced him to two years in jail on Thursday.

In his first comments after disqualification, the former Wayanad MP said he is ready to โ€œpay any priceโ€. โ€œI am fighting for the voice of India. I am ready to pay any price,โ€ Mr. Gandhi tweeted in Hindi yesterday.

The former Congress chiefโ€™s Wayanad seat also fell vacant after his disqualification.

Mr Gandhi was on Thursday found guilty of defamation for a 2019 campaign trail remark implying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a criminal. โ€œHow come all thieves have Modi as the common surnameโ€, he had allegedly remarked in Karnatakaโ€™s Kolar, after which several complaints were lodged against him in various states.

The Surat court that convicted Mr. Gandhi also granted him bail for 30 days to let him appeal the decision. โ€œMy religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it,โ€ he had tweeted quoting Mahatma Gandhi, in his first comment after the verdict.

New Delhi:  The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking direction to declare a national holiday on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala rejected the plea saying this is a matter for the Government of India to decide.

โ€œThe best way to celebrate his contribution is by working hard just like he worked hard for independence,โ€ the CJI said to the lawyer.

โ€œYou are making a mockery of the PIL jurisdiction. At least think what the court can do. I am looking at the recent spate of such petitions.

What will Supreme Court do? Take the jurisdiction of the court seriously. You are also a lawyer,โ€ CJI added.

The PIL was filed by advocate KK Ramesh seeking direction to declare January 23, the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose, as a national holiday.
