During the Bengal leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on Wednesday, a car carrying Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was allegedly “targeted,” resulting in the smashing of its windscreen, as claimed by the party.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Bengal unit chief of Congress, reported that the incident occurred after the yatra crossed into Malda district from Bihar’s Katihar in the morning.
Although the attack caused the rear windowpane of the vehicle to shatter, Gandhi remained unharmed. Visuals from the scene depicted Gandhi inspecting the damaged windscreen after disembarking from a sports utility vehicle. He was also seen sitting on the car’s roof, waving at enthusiastic crowds gathered along the road.
Chowdhury speculated that someone in the crowd might have hurled a stone at the car’s rear, expressing concern over the police force’s purported oversight. He emphasized the potential gravity of such oversights, stating that while this incident was minor, it could have escalated.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reaffirmed the yatra’s determination despite the setback, asserting that the INDIA alliance’s resolve remained steadfast despite the broken windshield.
Interestingly, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was slated to commence her ‘Jonosanjog Yatra’ in Malda on the same day. Security measures were reportedly intensified in anticipation of her visit.
Resuming the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi conducted a roadshow in Bihar’s Katihar district before re-entering Bengal through Debipur, Ratua in Malda district. The first phase of the yatra in Bengal concluded on Monday.
The yatra is scheduled to proceed to Murshidabad on February 1 before exiting the state the following day.
