Reports: PM Modi Gives ‘Complete Operational Freedom’ To Armed Forces On Pahalgam Response

On Tuesday, he convened a meeting with India’s senior defence officials and the leaders of the three armed services

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted significant meetings with Union Cabinet ministers, following the tragic loss of 26 lives, primarily tourists, in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi first led the Cabinet Committee on Security session, then convened the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs meeting.

After the initial CCS meeting, the government announced several non-military actions against Pakistan, such as suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari border, and revoking visas.

Modi reaffirmed his complete trust in the professionalism of the armed forces.

Reportedly, Modi said, “It is our national resolve to deliver a crushing blow to terrorism.”

“They have complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of our response,” reports quote him saying.

On Tuesday, he convened a meeting with India’s senior defence officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and the leaders of the three armed services.

General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff, also attended the meeting, which focused on evaluating India’s response strategies in light of the Pahalgam terror incident.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) convened for the last time following the attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting was in 2019 to assess the security landscape and devise countermeasures.

During this meeting, the committee approved the revocation of Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation status. Subsequently, on February 26, 2019, the Indian Air Force executed an airstrike on terrorist camps located in Balakot.

The current members of the CCPA include Prime Minister Narendra Modi as chairperson, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

The CCPA is responsible for reviewing and making decisions on significant political and economic issues affecting the nation. It convenes during critical times.

The central government primarily addresses state dynamics, especially when consensus is needed.

The committee engages in discussions and decisions regarding economic strategies and internal security matters with political ramifications.

Additionally, it facilitates coordination among various ministries on issues with extensive political implications and deliberates on foreign policy matters. These may influence the country’s political landscape.
