RG Kar Case Convict Sentenced To Life Imprisonment

RG Kar Rape and murder case convict  Sanjay Roy has been sentenced to life in jail. During the pronouncement of the sentence at a local court in Kolkata this afternoon, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, said that he has “not committed” the crime and is “being framed.”

The CBI, which was investigating the case, said it falls under the “rarest of rare” category and that the maximum punishment, the death penalty, should be awarded to Roy to “maintain people’s faith in society.”

Anirban Das, the Additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court,  said it’s not in the rarest of rare category. The court also directed the state to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family. The local court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment.

RG Kar medical college rape and murder convict Sanjay Roy has been brought to a court in the city for the pronouncement of the sentence.

Anirban Das, the Additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court, had on Saturday declared the 33-year-old guilty of rape and murder of the trainee doctor on August 9, 2024. Around 500 policemen have been deployed at Kolkata’s Sealdah court as Roy was brought in ahead of the pronouncement of the quantum of punishment.

The verdict will be delivered behind closed doors in view of the convicts safety who is also expected to be heard by sessions court judge Anirban Das today.
