According to trusted sources in the Mumbai Congress, Sanjay Nirupam of the Congress is likely to resign and either join the Bharatiya Janata Party or the Shiv Sena led by CM Eknath Shinde on Sunday , the 17th of March. Now why the date is significant is because, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi who is on his Bharat Nyay Yatra will be concluding his Yatra in Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park on Sunday.
Interestingly, former Mumbai Congres leader Milind Deora had switched ships on 14th of January 2024 which was the first day of the Nyay Yatra. The reason behind choosing the day is said to be diverting the media attention from Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra.
This will be the 4th big exit from the Grand Old Party’s Maharashtra unit after Milind Deora, Baba Sidiquie and former CM Ashok Chavan.
Nirupam is said to have been disgruntled over the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha Seat going to UBT’s Amol Kirtekar who is son of the sitting MP Gajanan Kirtikar, who is currently with the rival faction.
Uddhav Thackeray last week announced that Amol Kirtikar would be his party’s candidate from the Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency. On the other hand leaders from the Congress claim the discussion regarding seat sharing is still on.
In 2019 Niriupam lost the seat. However, what’s interesting is in 2004 the former Hindi Samana editor had contested from the Shiv Sena ticket and lost to Congress leader and actor late Sunil Dutt. Kirtikar who is the incumbent MP has won the seat twice consecutively.
MR Nirupam speaking to HW News English, responding to our questions said: Ye Mehej Afawah hai. Which translates to these are mere rumours.
