New Delhi: Resuming after 50-day summer vacation, the Supreme Court on Monday imposed four months imprisonment on fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya for contempt of court. A fine of Rs 2,000 was also levied on him.

The top court ordered him to deposit 40 million USD with interest within four weeks and asked the authorities to take attachment proceedings in case of his default.

โ€ The transaction, where Vijay Mallya transferred 40 million USD from the sale of the United Breweries property to his children, was void. All money transferred by him is to be returned to the loan recovery officer with 8 percent interest.โ€The Apex court said.

The former UB owner is accused in a bank loan default case of over Rs 9,000 crore involving his Kingfisher Airlines.

A plea was filed by a consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) before the Supreme Court seeking contempt action against Mallya, alleging that he had transferred USD 40 million to his children, thereby violating court orders.

The SC thereafter found him guilty of contempt in 2017. The court had, in August 2020, also dismissed his plea seeking a review of the 2017 verdict and ordered him to appear before it.

Earlier on March 10, the apex court reserved its order after hearing the case in absentia due to Mr. Mallyaโ€™s failure to appear before the court.

Mr. Mallya has been in the United Kingdom since March 2016. He is on bail on an extradition warrant executed by Scotland Yard on April 18, 2017.

โ€˜That wasnโ€™t my best catchโ€™: Modest Stokes produces World Cup gem

TestHostEntry

London | Ben Stokes insists his astonishing catch in Englandโ€™s World Cup rout of South Africa on Thursday doesnโ€™t rank as the best of his career.

Stokes capped a man-of-the-match display in Englandโ€™s 104-run victory at the Oval with one of the greatest catches in World Cup history.

Diving backwards to dismiss Andile Phehlukwayo with a one-handed take on the boundary off Adil Rashid, Stokesโ€™ sensational effort was immediately labelled โ€œthe catch of the centuryโ€ by former England spinner Phil Tufnell on the BBC.

It was the culmination of a remarkable day for Stokes, who also top-scored for England with 89 in 79 balls and took the last two wickets in successive balls to finish off the South Africans.

But Stokes claimed he preferred his stunning one-handed grab of an Adam Voges edge in the gully during a 2015 Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge.

Asked if it was the greatest catch of his life, Stokes told reporters: โ€œNah, that one was against the Aussies, so that one ranks higher!โ€ Stokes admitted he had misjudged the flight of the ball initially, leading Phehlukwayoโ€™s shot to flash past him until the all-rounder leapt backwards to complete a jaw-dropping catch with his right hand.

โ€œI was actually in the wrong position. It would have been a regulation catch if I was in the right place, but yeah it is one of those that sticks or doesnโ€™t,โ€ Stokes said.

โ€œI bowled the next over and Eoin Morgan had to come to me and ask if my heart rate had gone down. Things like that catch do get you fizzed up.

โ€œI didnโ€™t really know quite hard to react to be honest. I just tried to take it in.โ€ Regardless of which catch deserves top billing on Stokesโ€™ CV, the 27-year-old was grateful to be back in the spotlight for the right reasons.

Stokes had struggled to hit the heights he showed before being acquitted of affray last year following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub.

He returned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year out of form with both bat and ball.

But Stokes showed England can rely on him and he hailed the resounding win in the opening match of the tournament as a โ€œperfect dayโ€.

โ€œThe best thing about being an all rounder is you can influence the game pretty much the whole 100 overs. It is always nice when you can contribute to the team winning,โ€ he said.

โ€œThe most pleasing thing is we have got the first game out of the way and winning like that. There were a few nerves knocking about, there definitely was for me as I have not felt like that in a long time.
