SC Denies Urgent Hearing Of Plea By Uddhav Thackeray On EC Over Shiv Sena Name, Symbol Issue

SC

In a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, the Election Commission on Friday allotted the party name and its poll symbol to the group led by Eknath Shinde, as the group enjoys the support of 40 of the 55 MLAs and 13 of the 18 Lok Sabha members.

The Supreme Court refused an urgent hearing of the petition filed by the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. In the plea, the faction challenged the Election Commission’s order on the “bow and arrow” symbol row. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud refused the request for early listing and asked him to mention the matter on Tuesday as per the procedure.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission order alloting the party name ‘Shiv Sena’ and poll symbol bow and arrow to the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reported India Today reported.

The Uddhav camp’s strategy as of now is to seek an early hearing before a regular bench. However, there is currently no clarity on when the matter will be heard.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has asked the Uddhav faction to mention the case tomorrow and get it listed for seeking an urgent hearing.

The poll body has allowed the Thackeray faction to retain the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the ‘flaming torch’ poll symbol, given to it in an interim order in October last year, till the conclusion of ongoing assembly bypolls in the state.

This is the first time that the Thackeray family has lost control of the party that was founded in 1966 by Balasaheb Thackeray.
