SC To Hear Plea Seeking Implementation Of Places Of Worship Act On February 17

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear a petition filed by AIMIM chief and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, seeking the implementation of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

The case is set to be heard on February 17, alongside other related petitions. Owaisi’s plea, filed on December 17, 2024, urges the centre to ensure the effective implementation of the law, designed to preserve the religious character of places of worship as they stood on August 15, 1947.

The law, which was passed during the tenure of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, was a response to the  Ram temple movement of the 1990s.

What Is The Places Of Worship Act?

It prohibits the alteration of the religious nature of any religious site. It prevents the re-opening of historical disputes regarding places of worship, particularly those linked to the period of India’s colonial past.

Notably, the law excludes the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute from its purview, a matter resolved by the apex court in 2019.
