โ€œSecret Ballot, Elect Me To Save Democracyโ€: Yashwant Sinha Urges Political Parties On Presidential Election

Sinha

As the voting for the Presidential Election started this morning with the commencement of Parliamentโ€™s monsoon session, the joint opposition candidate for the top constitutional post Yashwant Sinha urged political parties to vote for him โ€œto save democracyโ€ and said he was fighting against government agencies too.

Yashwant Sinha on Monday said: โ€œThis election is very important and will set the path for the countryโ€™s democracy, whether it will stay or not. I hope all political parties vote in my favour to save democracy and protect the Constitution.โ€

Making a request to MPs and MLAs across the country to listen to their โ€œinner voiceโ€ and support him, Mr Sinha said: โ€œThis is a secret ballot. I appeal to all MPs and MLAs to use their discretion and elect me to save democracy.โ€

Mr Sinha is contesting against the NDAโ€™s candidate Droupadi Murmu, who is poised to sail through comfortably to become Indiaโ€™s 15th President. With counting of votes to be held on July 21, the new President is scheduled to take oath on July 25.

โ€œI am not just fighting a political battle, but a fight against government agencies too. They have become too powerful and there is also a game of money involved,โ€ Mr Sinha said.

Earlier on Sunday, Sinha, who played a role of union minister in Vajpayee government, released a statement on Twitter urging lawmakers to elect him in the crucial election. While he stands for safeguarding Indiaโ€™s democracy, Droupadi Murmu is โ€œsupported by those who are mounting daily attacks on democracy, Mr Sinha stressed in his statement.

โ€œI stand for protecting secularism, a preambular pillar of our Constitution. My rival candidate belongs to a party that has made no secret of its resolve to destroy this pillar and establish majoritarian supremacy,โ€ his statement read.

โ€œI stand for encouraging politics of consensus and cooperation. My rival candidate is backed by a party that practices politics of conflict and confrontation,โ€ he further added.

Reiterating his โ€˜battle of ideologiesโ€™ argument, Mr Sinha said the presidential election is not about the two candidates, but itโ€™s a contest between two ideologies.

Kejriwal Pens Down A Clear Message To PM Modi For Singapore Visit Clearance

Aleesha Sam

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleading with the government to provide permission for his trip to Singapore for the โ€œWorld Citiesโ€™ Summit.โ€ โ€œTo prevent a Chief Minister from attending such a significant event is not in the national interest. This invitation is a source of national pride and respect, โ€œHe wrote.

Simon Wong, the high commissioner for Singapore, extended the invitation to Mr. Kejriwal for the meeting in June, and he accepted it. But he hasnโ€™t yet gotten the go-ahead for the visit.

โ€œThe Singapore government has invited us to present the Delhi model at a world-class conference,โ€ Mr Kejriwal wrote. โ€œThe Delhi model will be presented in front of many big leaders around the world. The whole world wants to know about the Delhi model,โ€ he added.

โ€œGive permission as soon as possible so that I can elevate the name of the country with this visit,โ€ he added.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwalโ€™s proposed trip to Singapore in August to participate in the World Cities Summit is the latest issue of contention between the Union territoryโ€™s elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena.

An official from the CMโ€™s office said a file was sent to the LGโ€™s office on June 7 seeking approval for the visit, which is yet to come. The LGโ€™s office did not respond to calls and messages seeking comment.
