The Supreme Court has temporarily halted an Allahabad High Court order directing a survey of the 17th-century Shahi Idgah Mosque in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The survey, akin to the one conducted at Varanasi’s Gyanvapi Mosque, was approved by the high court, triggering objections from the Muslim side. Hindu groups assert the mosque stands on Lord Krishna’s birthplace and seek ownership of the disputed land, alleging the mosque was built after the demolition of the Katra Keshav Dev temple under orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
