Terrorists Suspected In Chennai Flight; Searched In Sri Lanka

A Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Chennai was subjected to a specialized security operation. This was at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on Saturday. It was following intelligence indicating the possible presence of individuals connected to the recent Pahalgam terror incident.

A spokesperson for the police stated that an alert from India regarding six suspected terrorists aboard the flight. This necessitated a search by Sri Lankan authorities upon the aircraft’s arrival.

Sri Lankan Police stated, “The search was carried out in coordination with local authorities following an alert from the Chennai Area Control Centre regarding a suspect wanted in India who was believed to be on board.”

There was no immediate official information regarding the suspect sought in India. But, a report from the PTI news agency, referencing Sri Lankan police, indicated that law enforcement conducted a search. This was of the flight after receiving a tip-off about a potential link to the April 22 terrorist attack. This was in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

Sri Lanka Airlines, in an official statement said, “SriLankan Airlines wishes to inform the public that Flight UL 122, operated by aircraft 4R-ALS, which arrived in Colombo from Chennai at 11:59 hrs today (3 May), was subjected to a comprehensive security search upon arrival.”

“This was carried out in coordination with local authorities following an alert from the Chennai Area Control Centre regarding a suspect wanted in India who was believed to be on board,” it further said.

“The safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority, and we strive to ensure that the highest standards of safety are consistently maintained,” the statement concluded.

The aircraft underwent a comprehensive inspection. Subsequently, it was cleared for further operations, as confirmed by Sri Lankan Airlines. They also noted that this mandatory security procedure resulted in a delay for the next scheduled service. It was Flight UL 308 to Singapore.
