Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Cabinet Agrees To Proposal To Stop Grants For New Madrasas

Aleesha Sam

Lucknow: On Tuesday, May 17, the Uttar Pradesh government agreed to a proposal to remove new madrasas from its grant list.

Ending the policy of the Akhilesh Yadav government, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Cabinet has determined that new madrasas will no longer receive any funding.

The UP government had allotted Rs 479 crore under the madrassa renovation scheme in its last Budget, awarding money to 558 of the state’s approximately 16,000 registered madrassas.

The decision to suspend supporting new madrassas came just a week after the Uttar Pradesh government mandated that all students and teachers in the state’s madrasas sing the National Anthem before lessons begin. The order went into effect on May 12th.

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Minority Affairs Danish Azad Ansari said that the state government wants the madrassa students to be ‘full of patriotism’. He said madarsa education is crucial for minorities and when the national anthem is sung, students would learn society’s values.

“Now Madarsa students study religious scriptures alongside math, science, and computer,” minister said. The minister also said the state government was working for the upliftment of madarsa education.
