Undergraduates in their fourth year securing a research internship are set to receive stipends, insurance coverage, and academic credits, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. Companies involved in the program must provide financial aid to participating students. Higher education institutions must appoint nodal officers for research internships who will collaborate with companies and group internship opportunities can be explored. Internship supervisors will assist students during the research internship, a Four Year Undergraduate Programme component.
Aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, UGC Chairman M Jagdish Kumar highlighted that mandatory internships enhance students’ employability. Surveys by educational institutions will determine local market needs, shaping internship projects accordingly. Institutions must publish details about internship projects and mentors.

The UGC encourages joint research projects at the university level and establishes student career counselling cells in university colleges involving industry representatives. Industry professionals will contribute to implementing professional and skill development programs.
The UGC advocates creating clusters comprising state-level universities, colleges, and industries to facilitate joint student research. Students’ scores will be recorded in the ‘Academic Bank of Credit’ under the National Education Policy. The program’s duration can be extended based on the company’s recommendation where the internship takes place.
To streamline the process, higher education institutions need to set up portal arrangements for API integration, allowing experts from companies or agencies to register, according to the UGC chairman. These guidelines aim to align internships with academic objectives, bolstering students’ practical skills and employability while fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
