Uddhav Thackeray said, “Until the Supreme Court decides on the matter, Belagavi, Karwar, and Nippani should be declared as a union territory”
Mumbai: After Shiv Sena Leader Uddhav Thackeray’s government collapsed in the state, for the first time Thackeray wrangled with the ruling coalition in the legislative council. His presence in the council coincides with the recent exchange of scathing remarks between the Maha Vikas Aghadi combine’s leaders and the ruling coalition regarding the long-standing border dispute with Karnataka. The Maha Vikas Aghadi combine’s leaders are the Congress, the NCP, and his party. At the council, he said that a separate union territory to be formed out of the contest territory.
Addressing the legislative council, Uddhav Thackeray stood firm and raised his voice over the issues being faced by Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka’s border area. He demanded to turn the area into union territory till the dispute is resolved.
He launched an attack on Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. “While Karnataka Chief Minister (Basavaraj Bommai) is aggressive on border row, Chief Minister Shinde is silent,” he said.
“Until the Supreme Court decides on the matter, Belagavi, Karwar, and Nippani should be declared as a union territory. This should be added in the proposal that is to be passed in the assembly,” he further said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that in the assembly on December 27 a resolution on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute will be introduced. “In any situation, we won’t be leaving our people residing in border areas, alone. We’ll fight for every inch of land whether in the Supreme Court or otherwise. We’ll fight against injustice meted out to those living in border areas and we will bring proposals. Maharashtra won’t relent,” he said, addressing the house.
Ahead of the assembly session, opposition leaders protested against the current ruling government. The state assembly has experienced commotion on the issue for the second week in a row. When the winter assembly sessions began last week in both Maharashtra and Karnataka, there was a significant march that took place close to the border. There were reports of several people being held amidst heavy security.
