Chennai| In a dramatic turn of events, the Central Bureau of Investigation team finally succeeded in getting hold of P Chidambaram. On Tuesday night, the CBI arrested the former Finance Minister from his residence. While, the CBI says Chidambaram’s arrest was necessary for the probe, his son Karti Chidambaram has said that the entire episode was conducted to create a “spectacle for the TV”. Karti, who was in Chennai left for Delhi as soon as Chidambaram was arrested.

Talking to News Agency ANI, Karti said that the arrest of his father is a “malicious” act by a “pliant” agency. He said, “This is a totally vindictive and malicious act, done by a pliant agency. This is only done to settle political scores. There was absolutely no necessity to have done this.” Calling it a “trumped-up” case, he further said that this was done only to tarnish the image of Congress and the former Finance Minister.

He said, “This has been done only to create a spectacle on TV & to tarnish the image of Congress party& the former Finance&Home Minister. This is a completely trumped-up case in which he has absolutely no connection. We will fight this out politically & legally.” He also said that this is being done to divert attention from issues like Article 370.

Chidambaram Arrested by CBI

The high drama surrounding the Jor Bagh residence of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram ends, with CBI taking him away for questioning. Chidambaram, who had reappeared after more than 24 hours, had briefed the media at party headquarters and said he is not running away, only seeking the protection of the law. CBI and ED had immediately rushed to the location, but Chidambaram managed to reach his house. The officials then climbed over the fence of his residence and entered his house, and have now taken him away for further questioning.

CBI to present him in court

After the arrest, CBI officials took him to the new CBI building. Ironically, the building was inaugurated by P Chidambaram during his tenure as Home Minister in 2011. CBI has already begun the questioning in the case. A team of doctors also conducted some medical tests on him. According to sources, CBI will present him in court today at around 2 PM. The agency will seek his remand for a few more days.
