Abhishek Manu Singhvi changes its stand on Savarkar call him freedom fighter

Singhvi said, “I personally don’t support Savarkar’s ideology but he was an accomplished man who played part in the freedom struggle

New Delhi: On Monday Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi recognized Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s efforts in the Indian freedom struggle and said that he was an “accomplished man”. Singhvi, however, was quick to clarify that he personally doesn’t subscribe to Savarkar’s ideology. His comments have come in the wake of the ongoing debate about a proposed Bharat Ratna to Savarkar.

Singhvi said, “I personally don’t subscribe to Savarkar’s ideology but that doesn’t take away the fact that he was an accomplished man who played part in our freedom struggle, fights for Dalit rights and went to jail for the country.

In its manifesto for the Maharashtra Assembly polls scheduled for October 21, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has proposed Bharat Ratna for Savarkar, a promise which has been questioned by the Congress.

Few days back Lok Sabha Member of Parliament and Indian National Congress leader Manish Tewari had criticised the National Democratic Alliance for bringing up the name of Veer Savarkar for Bharat Ratna in the party’s manifesto for the ongoing Maharashtra elections and further hit out by sarcastically adding that the NDA conferring Nathuram Godse with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor.

While Tewari in Nagpur, in Maharashtra stated, “Savarkar was only accused of conspiring to assassinate Gandhi, whereas Nathuram Godse carried out the assassination of Gandhi. This year we are celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on this occasion, the NDA government should straightaway confer the Bharat Ratna to Godse instead of Savarkar.”
