Amit Shah & BJP President To Address Pro-NPR Rally In Kolkata To ‘Clear Confusion’

Bengal BJP said it was necessary to address the issue as confusion has been ‘deliberately created by the TMC’ in the state that NPR is linked with NRC.

Kolkata| Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be on a day-long visit to the West Bengal capital today and address a rally to “clear the confusion” surrounding the amended Citizenship Act, BJP sources said on Saturday.

He is scheduled to address a massive public rally at Kolkata’s iconic Shahid Minar ground on Sunday, where the state unit of the BJP will felicitate him for the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. BJP national president J.P. Nadda will also attend the rally.

In what is being seen by political experts as a warm-up exercise by the BJP before the municipal polls and 2021 Assembly polls, Shah will also launch a statewide campaign ‘Aar Noy Annayay’ (No More Injustice) to connect with nearly five crore voters in West Bengal. In the evening, he will offer prayers at Kalighat Temple and at 9.50 pm depart for Delhi. In between, he will party leaders at a hotel in the New Town area.

Hours before Shah’s arrival, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Today on UN ‘Zero Discrimination Day’, it pains me to witness the politics of discrimination being woven into the fabric of India. Let us pledge to uproot all forms of division based on caste, creed and religion from our society. We will never stand for discrimination of any kind.”

CPI-M has announced plans to mobilise the students and youths in a big way on the streets of Kolkata in protest against the violence in Delhi, holding Shah responsible for the happenings.

“Kolkata is ready to welcome Shah in the same way Modi was welcomed – with black flags. Shah’s hands are soaked in blood in the Delhi clashes. He is not welcome in Bengal. There will be a Go Back Amit Shah programme across the state,” said Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member Md Salim.

He said the students and youth organisations will coordinate among themselves and carry out “novel forms of protest” with spontaneity and creativity.

There are nearly 31 per cent Muslim voters in Bengal and the anxiety among them over CAA cannot ignored.
