Assam NRC draft: Congress didn’t have the courage to implement NRC, alleges Amit Shah

New Delhi | Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) President Amit Shah on Tuesday while speaking on the Assam NRC draft in the Rajya Sabha said Congress didn’t have the courage to implement the NRC but the BJP did.

Responding to the opposition’s allegations on the NRC draft, Amit Shah said, “Rajiv Gandhi signed Assam Accord in 1985, which was similar to NRC. They did not have the courage to implement it, we did.”

BJP president further added that “It was Congress initiative and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is just implementing that under the directions of Supreme Court.”

Earlier on Monday, Congress president in a Facebook post stated, “The National Register of Citizens ( NRC) was initiated by the United Progressive Alliance under Manmohan Singhji to fulfil the commitment made in the Assam Accord of 1985. However, the manner in which this exercise has been undertaken by the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the centre and in the state of Assam leaves much to be desired.”

The opposition registered protest against Shah’s statement. Responding to the protest Vice president Venakaiah Naidu said, “This is Rajya Sabha, House of Elders. The entire country is watching. Don’t make a mockery of democracy.”
