BJP trying to divert attention from NE, won’t apologies, says Rahul Gandhi over Rape in India remark

Gandhi accused PM Narendra Modi and the BJP for diverting the focus from the agitation in the northeast over the Citizenship Act

New Delhi: On Thursday Rahul Gandhi used the term “Rape in India” to criticize the current sexual crimes in India while addressing an election rally in Godda district, Jharkhand.

Rahul Gandhi’s “Rape in India” statement was the attack on the government at an election rally in Jharkhand exploded in parliament today as the ruling BJP, including top ministers like Smriti Irani, took a jibe on Congress leader. The Lok Sabha adjourned repeatedly amid continuous protests and cries of “shame” from the government benches.

“For the first time in history, a leader is giving a clear call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi’s message to the people of India? He should be punished,” Smriti Irani said in the house.

Rahul Gandhi was not allowed by the Speaker to respond, told reporters outside: “I won’t apologies and let me clarify what I said. I said the PM keeps talking about Make In India. So when one opens the newspaper one hoped that one would see news about it, but what do we see when we open the papers? We see so several cases of rapes.”

Gandhi accused PM Narendra Modi and the BJP for diverting the focus from the agitation in the northeast over the Citizenship Act.

Taking a dig at the government led by PM Narendra Modi over rising crime against women in India, Mr Gandhi had said, “Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’ but nowadays wherever we look, it is ‘Rape in India’. In Uttar Pradesh, Narendra Modi’s MLA raped a woman, then she met with an accident but Prime Minister did not utter a word.”

In parliament, BJP MPs raised voice against Rahul Gandhi as Smriti Irani continued her attacks on the Congress MP. “Not all men are rapists. This is an insult to the country and Rahul Gandhi is touching 50 and doesn’t realize that such a statement seems like an invitation to rape in India,” said Smriti Irani.

“People who make such comments have no moral right to be a member of this parliament,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Rahul Gandhi, the Wayanad MP, was not present in the House at the time.

Gandhi had arrived by the time proceedings resumed shortly afternoon, but they have soon adjourned again.

The Lok Sabha has later adjourned sine die; today is the last day of the Winter Session of Parliament.
