China set to replace Carrie Lam as Hong Kong protest continues

Carrie Lam’s Successor will be on board by March 2020 as China plans to replace Lam following the unrest

China| Beijing is planning to change Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam with an “Interim”. If the Chinese President Xi Jinping moves further with the proposal Lam’s successor will be confirmed by March. The successor will complete the remainder of her tenure.

Many names starting popping up for the position. Lam’s top successors include the former head of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Norman Chan. Henry Tang, who has also served as the territory’s financial secretary and chief secretary for administration, is another possible successor, the report suggested.

Officials in China want to stabilize the situation before the final decision to be announced on change in leadership as they don’t want it to look like an invitation for violence.

In September Lam said she would step down if she could, she had never asked the Chinese government to let her resign in order to end the Chinese-ruled city’s political crisis, as per the reports.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Hong Kong since mid-June in sometimes violent protests against now suspended draft legislation that could have seen people sent to mainland China for trial in Communist Party-controlled courts.
