CJI Ranjan Gogoi slams media over Assam NRC coverage, says NRC important document for future

CJI Gogoi also slammed media for its coverage of Assam NRC. He said, “Irresponsible reporting by some media outlets made the situation worse.”

New Delhi| Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi speaking of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) implemented in Assam said that it is a very important document for the future. He said, “This is an opportunity to put things in proper perspective. The NRC is a document of the future, not of today. Not 19 million or 40 million. This is the basic document for the future, which can become the basis of people’s claims in the future.” CJI Gogoi was speaking at the launch of a book called Post Colonial Assam.

CJI Gogoi also slammed media for its coverage of Assam NRC. He said, “Irresponsible reporting by some media outlets made the situation worse. There was an urgent need to ascertain the number of illegal migrants, which was the NRC’s current endeavour.”

CJI Gogoi is retiring on November 17 this month. Justice S.A. Bobade will be the next Chief Justice of the country. President Ramnath Kovind had approved the proposal to appoint Bobade. On November 18, Bobade will take the oath of office.

Assam is the only state in the country where the NRC is in force. The last list of NRCs was released in the state on August 31. The list does not have the names of 19 lakh people in the state. However, these people will have many opportunities to prove their citizenship. They have been given the opportunity to apply to the Foreigners Tribunal within 120 days.

There are 300 such tribunals established in Assam. During this time, those who fail will be sent to the Detention Center. The main purpose of the NRC is to identify those living in Assam who are not from India and entered the state illegally.
