Congress Organizational Elections To Be Held In May: Sonia Gandhi Indicates At Virtual CWC Meeting

In May 2019, Sonia Gandhi became the interim president. A faction of Congress leaders is demanding the election of a full-time president who remains active.

 

New Delhi| A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is underway amid the internal tussle regarding the post of president in the Congress. According to party sources, party organization elections may be held in the month of May. Party chief Sonia Gandhi is chairing the CWC meeting, which is being held through video conferencing. She said that the inhumanity and arrogance shown by the government on the issue of farmers is shocking.

A faction of the Congress demands that the President be full time and remain active

In the last meeting of the CWC, it was decided that elections of the party organization should be held after the protests over the post of president arose. After Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as Congress president in May 2019, Sonia Gandhi became the interim president. A faction of Congress leaders is demanding the election of a full-time president who remains active.

Sonia had met the dissenting leaders last month

Last year, 23 senior Congress leaders wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi expressing their displeasure. They had called for a change in the party. These leaders included Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma, Manish Tiwari, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Mukul Wasnik and Prithviraj Chavan. Sonia had a meeting with these leaders last month and discussed all issues. Rahul and Priyanka were also present in the meeting.
