Congress Party Says Rahul Gandhi’s Account ‘Temporarily Suspended’, Twitter Denies

Due to this alleged action regarding the Twitter account, Rahul Gandhi could not tweet from his Twitter handle on Saturday.

New Delhi | The Congress on Saturday said that the twitter account of former party president Rahul Gandhi has been temporarily suspended. However, after the claim being denied by the micro-blogging site, the party said that the account has been temporarily locked. The claim was made by the party at a time when Twitter had deleted a picture posted by Rahul a day earlier, revealing the identity of a rape victim. It is believed that Rahul’s Twitter account has been banned because of this picture.

Giving information on the Twitter handle, the Congress party had written, “Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account has been temporarily suspended and the process is being followed to restore it. Until then, he will keep in touch with you through other social media platforms and will continue to raise the voice of the people and fight for them.”

Responding to the congressional claim, Twitter said the account has not been suspended and its service continues. Twitter said that when an account is suspended, it is removed from Global View. After this, the Congress party tweeted that the account has been temporarily locked.

Sources say that under the level of action taken against Rahul Gandhi’s account, he can login to his account, but cannot tweet, retweet and share any photo or video. Sources also said that Rahul Gandhi’s office is in the process of completing the necessary protocols to remove the ban on the Twitter account and the account will be restored soon.

Due to this alleged action regarding the Twitter account, Rahul Gandhi could not tweet from his Twitter handle on Saturday. He congratulated two Olympic medalists Neeraj Chopra and Bajrang Punia on Instagram on Saturday. Recently, Rahul Gandhi had shared a picture on his Twitter after meeting the parents of a 9-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Nangal village of Delhi.

After that, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had sent a letter to Twitter and Delhi Police asking them to take action in the matter. The commission said that posting a picture of the family of any minor victim on Twitter is a violation of Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and Section 23 of the Prevention of Child Sexual Offences Act (POCO).

The commission wrote on Twitter, “It is a violation of POCSO law to reveal the identity of a girl by tweeting a picture of her relatives.” Taking note of this, the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights issued a notice to Twitter India to remove this post.
