New Delhi | The Congress party is likely to make huge changes in its leadership after the party’s poor performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. According to sources, the party is all set to appoint a new president and it’s unlikely to be from the ‘Gandhi family’.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi is very keen to tender his resignation from the post and is unlikely to change his decision. Gandhi has also stated during the CWC meeting that the new president should not be from the Gandhi family.
In the Congress Working Committee meeting held on Saturday, Gandhi has tendered his resignation from the post taking entire responsibility for the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha polls. The resignation was however rejected by the CWC and Gandhi was rather given the responsibility to reinstate the party.
The party is also considering the option of appointing 4 executive presidents. However, Priyanka Vadra won’t be considered for the post as Rahul Gandhi wants to change the tag of Dynasty politics from the Congress party.
The question of appointing a new president becomes difficult for the Congress party as most members of the CWC have lost their respective elections, be it Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ashok Chavan. Most Chief Minister in the Congress governed state also failed to help the party to create an impact in the respective state be like Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot where the party failed to win a single seat or Madhya Pradesh’s KamalNath where only his son emerged victorious.
The only senior leader who could be considered for the post of President’s post is Punjab’s Captain Amarinder Singh where Congress won 8 out of 13 seats.
