New Delhi | Janta Dal-United (JDU) Rajya Sabha MP Harivansh Narayan Singh on Thursday got elected as the new deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha. Singh as BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate was contesting against Congress BK Hariprasad.
Harivansh got 125 seats in while Congress BK Hariprasad received 105 seats. Parties like YSRCP, Aam Aadmi Party and PDP were absent from the voting procedure. The JD(U) MP got support from NDA allies like Shiv Sena, Akali Dal along with regional parties like AIADMK, BJD and TRS.
A three time Rajya Sabha MP from JD(U) Harivansh Singh was the additional media incharge of former prime minister Chandrashekar. Singh holds a Postgraduate degree in Economics from Benaras Hindu University along with a PG Diploma in Journalism.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Singh on his appointment.”I congratulate Harivansh ji on behalf of the whole house. He has been blessed with the talent of writing. He was also a favourite of former PM Chandra Shekhar ji,” said PM Modi.
