First to rebel against Modi govt, Nana Patole now MVA’s pick for the speaker post

Nana Patole, the Congress leader was the first one from the BJP camp to rebel against PM Modi and his government in his first term.

 

Mumbai| As the MahaVikasAghadi of Congress, ShivSena and NCP prepare to face the floor test today, the parties have announced their candidates for the speakers’ post. While senior leader from Vidarbha-Nana Patole will be the face of the MahaVikasAghadi, BJP has nominated Kisan Kathare.

The selection of the speaker will be undertaken through a secret ballot. However, the floor test will be conducted on an open forum and it will be live telecasted. Nana Patole, the Congress leader was the first one from the BJP camp to rebel against PM Modi and his government in his first term. He later joined the Congress.

Patole hails from Vidarbha and is a Farmers’ leader. He is an OBC from Kunabi community. Thus, his selection can also be seen as maintaining the caste and regional balance. Many of the leaders sworn in with CM Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday hail from Western Maharashtra. Patole’s selection will help to maintain the regional balance.

Meanwhile, the BJP has said that it will approach the court against the decision of MahaVikasAghadi govt to change the pro tem speaker of the assembly. The alliance which claims a majority in the 288 member house, announced that Dilip Walse Patil will be the protem speaker. The Governor had appointed BJP’s Kalidas Kolambkar as the Protem Speaker.

BJP’s Maharashtra unit chief Chandrakant Patil today said that the party would approach Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari over Maha Vikas Agadi’s move to change protem speaker. Terming it ‘legally wrong’, Patil said that the new government is violating rules. “We are filing a petition with the governor, and might also approach the apex court,” he added.
