“Fringe is BJP’s core,” Rahul Gandhi remarked, citing past statements by top BJP officials as instances.
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Wednesday that the BJP’s core is ‘fringe,’ citing past statements by top BJP politicians in government positions.
After Kuwait and Qatar raised protests, the India Missions in Kuwait and Qatar issued comments labelling the contentious remarks of BJP’s now-sacked spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal on Prophet Mohammad as those of “fringe elements.”
While the government distanced itself from such sentiments and the BJP dismissed Sharma and expelled Jindal, the Ministry of External Affairs later stated that such individuals’ statements do not represent the government.

Rahul Gandhi’s statements came after a global backlash, primarily from Gulf countries, in response to comments made by BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, both of whom were ultimately dismissed from the party.
In the image tweeted by him, media reports quote Shah as calling Bangladeshi migrants “termites” and Yogi Adityanath saying that “women not capable of being left free or independent”.
Anurag Thakur is quoted as saying, “desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro saalon ko” and Sadhvi Pragya’s remark on Nathuram Godse is also mentioned.
The Congress said that the Indian embassy was being utilised by the BJP and questioned Prime Minister Modi’s silence on the matter. Pawan Khera, the party’s spokesperson, criticised the administration on the topic during a press conference on Wednesday.
āThis government has failed to win the confidence of every community, thanks to selective silence and selective outrage.ā He said, āthe fact that the embassy attached a mail of the statement of the BJP is unacceptable.ā
The remarks made by Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal on Prophet Muhammad drew international condemnation with some Islamic countries demanding an apology.
