Gandhi’s freedom struggle was “Drama” : Anant Kumar Hegde sparks controversy

He said “Congress supporters keep saying that India got independence because of Gandhi’s fast and satyagraha. This is not true

Bengaluru: BJP leader and Parliamentarian Anant Kumar Hegde once again has sparked controversy for the wrong reasons. This time he has attacked Mahatma Gandhi and called the freedom struggle led by him a “drama”.

Hegde also questioned as to how “such people” are called ‘Mahatma’ in India.

During his address in a public event at Bengaluru on Saturday, Hegde said the entire freedom movement was “staged with the consent and support of the British”.

Parliamentarian from Uttara Kannada said that “None of these so-called leaders were beaten up by the police even once. Their independence movement was one of the huge drama. It was conducted by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight but it was an adjustment freedom struggle,”.

The senior BJP leader also termed Mahatma Gandhi’s hunger strikes and satyagraha as a “drama”.

He said “Congress supporters keep saying that India got independence because of Gandhi’s fast and satyagraha. This is not true. The British did not leave India because of satyagraha,”.

“Britishers gave independence to India out of frustration. My blood boils when I read history. Such people become Mahatma in India,” he added.
