“Human Rights will be prime concern for Army”: Army Chief Manoj Naravane

Speaking on the CDS post he said that it will be great change in the armed forces are operating to bring about significant reforms in the military system

New Delhi: New Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane says the Army’s prime concern will be to be operationally prepared at all times and has pledged special attention to respecting human rights.

General Naravane’s statement came during a brief interaction with reporters on Wednesday in New Delhi, where he paid tributes at the National War Memorial and inspected a guard of honor.

Naravane was present during Chief of Defence Staff(CDS) General Bipin Rawat’s guard of honor apart from Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria and Navy Chief Karambir Singh.

β€œIt is issue which we have to keep working on day after day, month after month to be able to maintain those high standards and operational readiness comes as a result of modernization, better equipment, good tactics and strategy, good morale of the men, all of that goes into maintaining high standard of readiness, so that would be my main aim,” said Naravane.

Speaking about Pakistan Naravane said that if Islamabad does not stop terrorism then India has the right to pre-emptively strike at sources of terror threat with multiple options across the spectrum.

Before his appointment as the Army Chief, General Naravane was serving as Vice Chief of the Indian Army. Before that, he was heading the Eastern Command of the force, which managed the 4,000 km border with China.

In his 37 years of service, General Naravane has seen service in countless command and staff appointments in peace, field and highly active counter-insurgency environments in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India.

Naravane also holds the distinction of holding key command and staff appointments in peace and field both in the northeast India and Jammu and Kashmir and has been part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and has commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, raised an Infantry Brigade, as Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) and has also commanded a reputed Strike Corps.
