Hotstar Blocks John Oliver’s Episode Criticising Modi

In his show ‘Last Week Tonight’, Oliver had criticized the Narendra Modi government over the controversial Citizenship law and the threat that minorities face in India.

Mumbai| The Disney-owned OTT platform Hostar India has taken down the episode of Comedian John Oliver’s show ‘Last Week Tonight’, in which he had criticized the Modi Government, BJP and RSS.

The Emmy Award Winner Comedian had briefly explained the history of Narendra Modi, from how his Visa was banned by the US after the 2002 riots in Gujarat to hosting President Trump in the same state of Gujarat. Although Hotstar has taken down the episode from their platform, it remains available on Youtube for viewing purposes.

Mr. Oliver elaborated on how widespread protests have erupted in India over the new citizenship act. He also took potshot on president Trump for referring Modi as ‘father of India’ since the title is often bestowed upon Mahatma Gandhi. On the same, Mr. Oliver said, “Calling Modi the father of India is stupid at best and dangerous at worst.”

Oliver also spoke at a length about the demonetization imposed by the Modi government in 2016. He also explained the impact that demonetization had on the poor class.

Talking about Modi’s links with the RSS, he said that the RSS had an admiration for Hitler. “They talk about the purity of race which is just not a chill thing to admire Hitler for. The only thing Hitler should be admired for is he killed himself.” Mr. Oliver said.

He also showed a clip of UP CM Adityanath in which he could be seen saying, “If they kill one Hindu then we will also kill 100 of them.”
