New Delhi| Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi has asked the leaders of the party’s Maharashtra unit to finalize the seat-sharing with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) soon and begin the election campaign. The Assembly elections are proposed in the state in October. According to sources, in Maharashtra, the main plank of seat-sharing between Congress and NCP is the fixation of seats for some smaller parties like “Swabhimani Paksha”.

New Maharashtra Congress Unit
After the dismal performance of the party in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ashok Chavan resigned as the party state president. The party later appointed Balasaheb Thorat as the new president of the party. After the new PCC was formed several rounds of talks were held with NCP and other smaller parties but nothing has been finalized yet. The party is trying to build a rainbow coalition with several small political outfits to present a front against BJP-Shivsena.
Prakash Ambedkar offers 144 seats to Congress
Meanwhile, Prakash Ambedkar, the head of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, has given a new proposal to the Congress for an alliance in the assembly elections. Ambedkar said that he is making an open offer to give 144 seats of the assembly to the Congress. Out of 288 seats in the Legislative Assembly, Congress will fight on 144 seats and the VBA will fight remaining 144. The congress has been trying to get Bharipa-AIMIM coalition (VBA) on board. However, since Lok Sabha elections, Prakash Ambedkar has been adamant on the number of seats.
