Mahatma Gandhi’s Grandson, Gopalkrishna Likely To Be Left’s suggestion for Presidential polls: Sources

Gandhi was the consensus opposition candidate for the post of vice-president of India in 2017 but had lost to M Venkaiah Naidu in the polls.

The Left parties have suggested the name of Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, for the upcoming Presidential polls. He has sought time to think over the matter. According to Sources the Left parties, in their meeting with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, who himself is speculated to be one of the candidates for the highest post in the country,on Tuesday, suggested the name of the former West Bengal governor. Pawar wasn’t averse to the suggestion. His name is likely to be proposed at today’s meeting.

In an interaction with  India Today, Gopalakrishna Gandhi said, “I have been asked if I would consider being such a candidate if a consensus builds around my name. I have said I need some time to think about this important suggestion.” “Consultations among all concerned are underway. It would be premature to say more at this juncture,” he concluded.

The 77-year-old former bureaucrat has also served as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka. He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C Rajagopalachari.

Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting of various opposition parties to deliberate on the opposition’s choice of the presidential nominee.

Secretary, CPIM), Akhilesh Yadav (President, Samajwadi Party)forwhom Mamta had campaigned during the UP assembly elections heldearlier this year.
NCP Shard Pawar who himself is speculated to be one of the candidates
