Maldives’ president vowed to upgrade the military to defend its vast waters after ending the Indian troop presence. In his parliamentary address, Muizzu said he would transform the modest defence force into a modern navy to patrol global shipping lanes around the islands. He reiterated India will start withdrawing aircraft and personnel in March and finish within two months, despite New Delhi seeing the Indian Ocean state as its area of influence.
