West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday claimed that a conspiracy was on to physically eliminate her and said a political party has even hired contract killers for the purpose.
“I have come to know that a conspiracy is on to kill me. A political party has given supari (contract) for eliminating me. The contract killers, who have already received an advance, did a recce of my office and residence, as also other nearby places,” Banerjee said during an interview.
“But I’m not scared,” the Trinamool Congress president said, declaring that she had already readied her “political will” on who should lead the party in her absence.
She didn’t elaborate but the statement is seen as a reference to the attack on her when a CPM youth wing leader Lalu Alam allegedly hit Ms Banerjee on her head with a stick in 1990. Ms Banerjee, then a Congress leader, suffered a skull fracture and was in hospital for a month.
Ms Banerjee lives in her very modest home she had occupied from before she became chief minister. Securing her in the single-storey house on south Kolkata’s Harish Chatterjee Street has long been considered a security challenge by the police.
