Manmohan Singh was delivering a lecture on ‘seventieth Anniversary of our Independence: Strengthening the Roots of our Democracy’.
In a gesture of gratitude, Former Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh donated as much as 3500 books from his personal collection to the Punjab university– his Alma Mater. He was attending the oration event of the Dr SB Rangnekar Memorial by the Department of Economics.
Manmohan Singh also had worked at Punjab University as a Professor. On Wednesday, he was delivering a lecture on the topic ‘seventieth Anniversary of our Independence: Strengthening the Roots of our Democracy’.
Talking about the two facets of democracy, Singh expressed concern over the fast-growing binary of freedom and development. Singh said, “The people of India must not accept the dangerous and false binary of choosing between freedom and development.” He said that this binary is also taking root in the Indian politics.
Reiterating the party’s concern, Manmohan Singh said that the atrocities against Dalits and minority communities are increasing. “These tendencies harm our democracy. “We must outright reject the divisive politics and policies,” said Singh.
