Mayawati asks Union government to implement Supreme Court’s directives on SC/ST reservation in promotion

New Delhi | Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgement on SC/ST reservation in promotion and asked the Union government to implement the Apex court directives.

Mayawati has asked the Narendra Modi led Union government to implement the Supreme court directives by issuing a letter to all the state governments. Speaking to media, Mayawati said, “The Apex court has not issued a stay order on the reservation in the promotion. It had clearly mentioned that the Central or State Government will have to take a decision regarding this”.” BSP is demanding that the Central government should immediately implement the reservation in promotions,” added Mayawati.

The Supreme Court in its verdict said that its earlier judgement of 2006 putting benefits of quotas in job promotions for SC/ST employees need not be referred to a seven-judge bench. The Five judge bench headed by CJI Deepak Misra turned down Centre’s plea that overall population of SC/ST be considered for granting quota for them. The Bench further added that the state governement need not collect quantifiable data on backwardness of SC/ST for giving quota in job promotion to SC/ST employees.

The Supreme Court in its 2006 judgement in M Nagraj case has stated that the states are bound to provide quantifiable data on the backwardness of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the facts about their inadequate representation in government jobs and the overall administrative efficiency, before providing quota in promotions to members of these communities.
