Five BJP candidates secured victory in the Maharashtra Legislative Council election held on Monday.
Mumbai: The BJP won five seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council election, while the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party each won two.
Along with NCP leaders Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, the BJP’s Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre, Shrikant Bhartiya, and Pravin Darekar were elected. Shiv Sena candidates Amshya Padvi and Sachin Ahir also won.
Meanwhile, MLC elections were won by Mumbai Congress chief Bhai Jagtap, raising the total number of MVAs to five.
For the 10 MLC seats, the BJP fielded five candidates while the MVA fielded six. Despite having a small number of supporters, the BJP was able to gain a large number of votes in the election.
Devendra Fadnavis, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, reacted to the victory by saying, “We were successful in electing all five candidates. The BJP received 123 votes in the Rajya Sabha. We received 134 votes in the council elections. We didn’t have enough votes for our fifth candidate. He did, however, receive more votes than two Congress candidates.”
In the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the BJP has 106 MLAs, with the remaining votes for its candidates coming from independent MLAs, small parties, and other parties.
As per reports, all the candidates secured the minimum quota of 26 votes each to make it to the Upper House of the state legislature.
