He called Modi’s comments unfortunate and said, “It is a matter of record the then Prime Minister visited the aircraft carrier in his official capacity just as PM Modi and Defence minister visit Vikramaditya the aircraft carrier.” He added, “Prime Minister is threatened because of the imminent defeat staring him in the face. But he should not lose his sense of proportion and make irresponsible statements.”

He said that Rajiv Gandhi visiting INS Virat along with his family was in an official capacity and it was well within rules and his right to do so. Sharma said, “If PM Modi had family and he would also be going there. but he goes alone because he has no connection with a family or any respect for family values.”

However, three former naval officers came forward on Thursday stating that Rajiv Gandhi was the only person on board INS Virat and no foreigner or the Gandhi family member was accompanying him. Former naval chief Admiral L Ramdas in his statement also said that no ships were specially diverted for Rajiv Gandhi’s vacations.
