Opposition MPs Boycott JPC Meeting To Discuss Waqf Amendment Bill For 2nd Consecutive Day

Waqf (Amendment) Bill

MPs from the opposition walked out of a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) meeting to review the Waqf Amendment Bill after accusing members of the Bharatiya Janata Party of using derogatory language against them, according to news agency PTI. This is the second consecutive day that the Opposition MPs have boycotted the meeting.

According to an India Today report, the Opposition MPs alleged that the committee’s chairperson, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, did not function according to the rules and failed to take action against his party members. However, the BJP MPs claimed that the Opposition members were abusing Pal.

Later in the day, the Opposition leaders wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about the “gross violation of the parliamentary code of conduct” at the meeting held on Monday, PTI reported.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 seeks reforms, introducing digitisation, stricter audits, transparency, and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied Waqf properties.
