Palestine calling: PM Modi to begin three-nation tour to Gulf today

PM Modi is expected to sign a number of MoU’s focusing on humanitarian aspects. As a humanitarian gesture, India will also set up a hospital in Ramallah.

In what can be called as a historic visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today will embark upon a three-nation tour. PM Modi between February 9-February 12 will pay a visit to Palestine, Oman, and UAE.

While his visit to the Gulf and the West Asian region is fifth, it is his first visit to Palestine. The unprecedented visit also holds key importance as it is for the first time that Indian Prime Minister will pay a visit to Palestine. Modi said he was looking forward to his discussions with President Mahmoud Abbas and reaffirming India’s support for the Palestinian people and the development of Palestine.

On Friday, PM Modi will visit Jordan on Friday and meet the King of Jordan Abdullah II. Keeping in mind the security perspective, the meeting was already scheduled. PM Modi will then depart for Ramallah on Saturday morning and visit Yasser Arafat museum. In the last leg of the tour, he will visit UAE where he will lay a foundation stone of a temple. He will on 11-22 February visit Oman for the first time as a PM and will hold talks with the Sultan of Oman.

According to PM Modi, his visit to Palestine will mostly remain “humanitarian” and not “political.” The Prime Minister is expected to sign MoUs on education, health, information technology and skill development. To highlight the humanitarian gesture, India will also announce Focussing on the humanitarian side, it is likely to announce the setting up of a 100-bed super-speciality hospital in Ramallah.

According to sources, Modi government will provide infrastructure support for the people of Palestine who do not have good access to world-class healthcare and education.

Last year, PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel. This year, by visiting Palestine which is in conflict with Israel, PM Modi has broken the jinx and India’s neutral stand.
