RSS defamation case: Rahul Gandhi to appear in Bhiwandi court

Mumbai | Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday arrived in Mumbai ahead of his hearing in RSS defamation case at Magistrate court in Bhiwandi, Thane.

Rajesh Kunte, a local RSS functionary had filled a case against Rahul Gandhi alleging that in his speech at a political rally on March 6, 2014, the Congress president had claimed that the ‘RSS people had killed Mahatma Gandhi’.

Gandhi withdrew his petition filed in the apex court, challenging the case and said he would face the trial after the Supreme court refused to interfere with the criminal proceedings pending against him before the trial court.

“The court is likely to frame charges against the Congress chief in the defamation case”, Narayan Iyer representing Rahul Gandhi in the Bhiwandi court told media.

Earlier the Congress party tweeted that Mr. Gandhi will be addressing booth workers in the Mumbai later today.


Earlier the Congress leader had not appeared before the court on April 23 after his lawyer had filed an application for exemption.

During his two-day visit to Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to address party workers and interact with its corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. While tomorrow, he is scheduled to meet the kin of Dadaji Khobragade, the rural inventor who revolutionised rice farming, at Chandrapur in Vidarbha, before returning to Delhi.
