Sharad Pawar to meet NCP Ministers today over Elgar Parishad probe and NPR

Pawar said the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was wrong in letting the NIA take over the probe into the Elgar Parishad case from the state police

Mumbai: In Maharashtra as Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance has got a difference of view over the Elgar Parishad investigation and NPR, NCP chief Sharad Pawar has called a meeting of all ministers of his party on Monday.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the ShivSena, NCP, and Congress had cracks in state government as the views on Elgar Parshad case are different and now Pawar for the first time criticised for Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray after establishing a government in Maharashtra in November. Pawar said the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was wrong in letting the NIA take over the probe into the Elgar Parishad case from the state police

A few days back Pawar slammed Thackeray’s decision on a day when a Pune court passed an order to transfer the Elgar Parishad case to a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai. The court also stated the order of probe by the central agency cannot be said to be illegal or improper.

NCP supremo said it was not right on the part of the Central government to hand over the probe into the case, which was with the Pune police, to the NIA as law and order was a state subject. “It was not right for the Central government to hand over the probe into the case to the NIA. But it was even more wrong for the Maharashtra government to support the transfer of the case,”.

NCP leader and state home minister Anil Deshmukh said Uddhav Thackeray had overruled on the case. The Maha Vikas Aghadi government had initially criticised the Central government’s move to hand over the case to the NIA.

The fissures widened further when UddhavThackeray gave his approval to the National Population Register (NPR) in the state in a snub to allies NCP and Congress. According to sources Uddhav Thackeray was keen to implement NPR in Maharashtra from May 1, even though the NCP and Congress remain opposed to the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Congress has earlier stated that National Population Register is nothing but “NRC in disguise”, the NCP too said it had made its reservations with the exercise clear.

NCP leader Majeed Memon had said that “It is clear that our party is not supporting NPR and Sharad Pawar has made it clear. The final decision has to be accepted by all three parties.”

The three parties came together after Sena broke its long time alliance with BJP over the chief minister’s position after Maharashtra polls. However many critics question the sustainability of the alliance, as ideological stands of all three parties are different.
