New Delhi | CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury writes to Election Commission over alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct by Prime Ministre Narendra Modi over his Balakot Air Strike comments.

In an interview with a news channel, PM Modi had said that they used clouds as a cover for escaping the Pakistani radars during the Balakot Air Strikes.

Yechury wrote a letter to the EC regarding these remarks about the nation’s military activities, and urged them to take an action against this “flagrant violation”.

The letter, shared by the leader on social media, reads that PM Modi had made an “outrageous claim”.

He said that he approved the cross-border mission of the Indian Air Force despite bad weather and against professional expert advise, “because the clouds would hide Indian fighter jets from Pakistani radars,” said Mr Yechury.

“This interview wherein Mr. Modi gave out the operational details of a sensitive military mission, with a purpose to influence the voters during the silent period of the campaign needs to be recorded and acted upon by the Commission,” the letter further read.

“His behaviour and statements are in clear and deliberate violation of the guidelines which were reissued and reiterated by the Election Commission before the first round of polling, which made it clear that the armed forces which belong to all of India, cannot be a subject for hyperbolic and false claims by any party for garnering votes.”

Yechury pointed out to another comment made by PM Modi about the Indian Army.

“Further news of Mr. Modi using the armed forces to seek votes and mocking the Election Commission comes, this time from an election rally in Kushinagar on May 12. Mr. Modi is reported to have said, ‘Today terrorists were killed by our Army in Kashmir.

Now some people are worried as to why did Modi kill the terrorists when voting is under way?..an armed terrorist is attacking, do my jawans go to the Election Commission to seek permission to kill him?.”

The letter ends, with Yechury accusing the EC of being biased towards PM Narendra Modi and BJP Chief Amit Shah, by considering them “above the electoral process”.

The opposition had criticised Modi for these remarks too.

He said that he is hopeful that the EC will take appropriate actions.

This is not the first time PM Modi has faced backlash for his actions.

BJP has been perpetually using military and nuclear strength in their election campaigns this Lok Sabha polls.
