Swapan Dasgupta Resigns From Rajya Sabha After TMC bjection Over Nomination

The Trinamool Congress had said that Swapan Dasgupta is a nominated MP. In such a situation, his contesting on behalf of the BJP is against the constitution.

 

New Delhi| The political battle of West Bengal has now reached Parliament. The Trinamool Congress was scheduled to bring a proposal to cancel MP Swapan Dasgupta’s membership in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Before this, he resigned from the post of Rajya Sabha MP. Swapan Dasgupta has sent his resignation to the Rajya Sabha chairman.

The Trinamool Congress had said that Dasgupta is a nominated MP. In such a situation, his contesting on behalf of the BJP is against the constitution. In fact, for the Bengal assembly elections, the BJP has given a ticket to the big face of Bengal politics, Swapan Dasgupta from Hooghly’s Tarakeswar assembly seat, which TMC is opposing.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra said on social media that Dasgupta is the BJP’s candidate for the West Bengal elections, while the 10th schedule of the constitution says that a Rajya Sabha nominated MP will take an oath and after the end of its 6-month term if he joins any political party, he will be disqualified from membership of Rajya Sabha.

This session will run till 8 April. The proceedings of both the houses are going on from 11 am to 6 pm. During this period Rajya Sabha members will sit in Rajya Sabha and Gallery. Apart from this, the proceedings of the Lok Sabha will also continue as before. Because of the coronavirus situation, both houses were run in two shifts.
