The new Congress leader should be able to infuse fresh energy: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Bhopal | Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that the next Congress president should be someone who can infuse fresh energy in the party.

Scindia said that the new leader must be appointed soon as seven weeks have passed since Rahul Gandhi’s resignation.

“The Congress will have to look for its new president. Seven weeks have passed. There should not be a delay in it and a person who can infuse fresh energy in the Congress under the leadership of Soniaji and Rahulji should be given an opportunity,” Scindia told reporters.

Talking about Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, Scindia said that when Gandhi was adamant in his stepping down.

“We had not imagined that Rahul Gandhi would relinquish his post. This is a serious time for the Congress. We thought we would be able to persuade him to reconsider. But when Rahulji takes any decision, he is firm on it,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi had offered his resignation soon after the massive Lok Sabha defeat of the grand old party, taking moral responsibility. However, the Congress Working Committee, Congress’ highest decision-making body, had rejected the offer.

But Gandhi kept on insisting until he finally announced his resignation earlier this month.

“The CWC members and other senior leaders will have to sit together to make a decision on the new Congress president. This is the first time we are facing such a situation,” Scindia said.

The CWC is expected to meet soon to give a final shape to the succession plan.

Jyotiraditya Scindia had last week stepped down fro the post of Congress General Secretary of Uttar Pradesh (West) taking responsibility for the defeat, soon after Rahul Gandhi’s announcement.

Scindia lost in his stronghold constituency of Guna in Madhya Pradesh, lost to BJP leader KP Singh Yadav by more than 1 lakh votes in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
