Top cop arrested with militants had allegedly asked Afzal Guru to ferry terrorists out of vally

According to Afzal Guru’s letter, Davinder was in touch with him and Mohammed regularly but this angle went unprobed.

Srinagar| On Saturday, a decorated officer of Jammu and Kashmir police- Davinder Singh was arrested in a dramatic turn of events with two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist on his way to Delhi. He was travelling with them to Delhi in a car when the police nabbed them at Srinagar-Jammu Highway. The police found AK-47 and other deadly weapons in their car.

Davinder Singh was posted at security-sensitive Srinagar Airport. Last year, Davinder was awarded with President’s Medal for bravery. Of the two militants caught with him, one named Naveed Babu was allegedly a top commander of Lashkar–Taiba. He is accused of killing non-local traders in October and November last year. The other militant named Altaf is a member of Hizbul Mujahideen.

While it certainly is astonishing that a top police official awarded President’s medal was found accompanying militants, it also requires us to go through the past instances when he was accused of having links with militants.

His name had cropped up in a letter written by Afzal Guru from Tihar jail to his lawyer Sushil Kumar. In the letter, Guru had mentioned that a DSP named Dravinder Singh at Humhama STF camp had tortured him. In the letter which has already been published in various publication Afzal Guru mentions, “One day Altaf took me to Dravinder Singh (D.S.P.). D.S. told me that I had to do a small job for him that has to took one man to delhi as I was well aware about Delhi and has to manage a rented house for him. Since I was not knowing the man but I suspected that this man is not Kashmiri as he did not speak in Kashmiri but I was helpless to do what Dravinder told me. I took him to Delhi. One day he told me that he want to purchase a car. Thus I went with him to Karol Bagh. He purchased the car. Then in Delhi he used to meet different persons and both of us he Mohammad and me used to get the different phone calls from Dravinder Singh.”

Mohammed, who is mentioned in the letter was one of the accused in the 2001 Parliament Attack which had shocked the nation. He was shot dead. Afzal Guru who was accused of aiding the attack was hanged in 2013.

According to Afzal Guru’s letter, Davinder was in touch with him and Mohammed regularly but this angle went unprobed.

The police later in the press conference said that Davinder Singh will be treated at par with militants.
