The opposition too quickly jumped in the matter and took a strong objection to the alleged government interference in the judiciary and stalling of appointment of KM Joseph .

This week, the supreme headlines were made by the ongoing stand-off between the government and judiciary over the appointment recommended by the Supreme Court collegium. While many suspected that the government had political motives behind stalling the elevation of justice KM Joseph, the CJI himself pronounced that government was “well within its right to send back the recommendation for reconsideration.” The opposition too quickly jumped in the matter and took a strong objection to the alleged government interference in the judiciary.

Here are the political news of the week that stirred the country.

  1. Dalit outreach by Congress:

Ahead of 2019, the political parties have increased their activities to reach out to the Dalit community. The votes from the community will play a key role in deciding the victory of a party in 2019. The Congress party launched its campaign to increase its outreach towards Dalit community this week. Named ‘Save Constitution’, the campaign is slated to run for over a year.

  1. Salman Khurshid’s shocking comment:

Senior Congress leader and advocate Salman Khurshid made a shocking statement this week. Talking at an event organized at Aligarh Muslim University he said that his party does have blood on its hands and that people should learn from that mistake. The senior leader was asked about the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the riots following the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 when the Congress was in power at the Centre.

Khurshid replied to the question with reference to these instances that “This is the reason you’re telling us that if someone attacks you then we (Congress) must not come forward to protect you.”

  1. Stalling of Justice KM Joseph’s elevation:

The Centre stalled the elevation of justice KM Joseph, drawing criticism from all the spheres. While Centre returned the recommendation for the appointment of Justice KM Joseph, it approved the recommendation of appointment of Indu Malhotra. Legal experts and jurist across the lines criticized the government saying that government was trying to interfere in the judicial matters.

Former Chief Justice of India Justice R M Lodha said said that the government’s segregation rejecting the SC collegium recommendation to appoint Justice K M Joseph, at the same time cherry picking the recommendation to appoint Indu Malhotra, “strikes at the very heart of the independence of the judiciary.”

  1. Kamlesh Nath becomes Congress MP Unit chief:

The Congress party has finally ended months of suspense and appointed senior leader Kamalnath as the president of Madhya Pradesh Congress. Jyotiraditya Scindia has been appointed as campaign committee chief for the state election.

Along with the appointment of Kamalnath, the party also named four working presidents – Tribal leader Bala Bachchan, senior legislator Ramnivas Rawat, Indore MLA Jitu Patwari and leader Surendra Chaudhary.

The 9-time Member of Parliament from the Chindwara constituency Kamalnath has a tough task in front of him ahead of the Madhya Pradesh state election. He is seen as an outsider and has an influence limited only to 30 to 40 seats in the southern belt.

The other challenges in front of him are to avoid the clash of supremacy in the Congress between Jyotiraditya Scindia and Digvijay Singh.

  1. Siddaramaiah calls PM Modi “North Import”:

A Twitter spat commenced between Congress and BJP after Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah labelled Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath as “north Indian imports” which the other party described as being divisive politics.

In the tweet, the Karnataka CM is clearly referring to the opposition BJP’s pre-poll strategy, which involves fielding PM Modi for as many as 20 rallies, besides other star campaigners like Yogi Adityanath, Amit Shah and Hema Malini, in an all-out effort to expel the Congress from power.

In a blistering attack over Siddaramaiah’s “imports” comment, the BJP said his attempt to divide North and South India is “disgusting”.
