West Bengal government is against ‘Yatras’ that kill people: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkatta | West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday took a dig at the Bhartiya Janata Party’s plan to hold Rath Yatras across the state.

Addressing an event, Mamata Banerjee said, ISKCON does Rath Yatras, they carry out Jagannath Rath Yatra, they don’t carry out yatras to kill ppl. Those who carry out yatras to kill people indulge in danga yatras. There are yatras for Lord Krishna & Lord Jagarnath, we take part in those rath yatras.”

The Supreme Court on December 24 denied urgent hearing in the petition filed by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Calcutta High Court’s division bench order on BJP’s yatra in West Bengal.

The BJP had approached the Supreme Court requesting permission to hold its Rath Yatra in West Bengal. The party has challenged the order of the division bench of the Calcutta High Court which had set aside the order of a single judge allowing the Rath Yatra.

The Calcutta High Court on December 21 had quashed the single bench order that allowed BJP‘s ‘Rath Yatra’ in West Bengal. The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Debasish Kargupta and Justice Shampa Sarkar had sent the case back to the single bench to consider intelligence inputs by state agencies. The two judges’ bench order came after hearing an appeal moved by the state government, challenging the Thursday order of the single bench.

On December 20, Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty of the Calcutta High Court had gave the BJP to hold its Rath Yatra against the decision of a state government panel The single judge bench had directed that the state government to ensure that law and order is maintained during the programme.
