On Saturday, Amit Shah, the Union home minister, affirmed that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be enforced before the forthcoming Lok Sabha election. The legislation, sanctioned by Parliament in December 2019, aims to grant citizenship to individuals who encountered persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, not revoke anyone’s Indian citizenship. Shah emphasized that the CAA was being misrepresented to Muslim communities and asserted its humanitarian purpose.
