Wrestler Babita Phogat, father Mahavir Phogat join BJP

Rohtak | ‘Dangal’ film inspirer wrestlers Babita Phogat and father Mahavir Phogat have joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi.

They joined the saffron party in presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Her father and Dhronacharya awardee Mahavir Phogat said he would also switch parties and join her daughter in the BJP.

Ahead of the 2019 national elections, Mahavir Phogat had joined Jannayak Janata Party. He was named the chief of party’s sports cell.

Mahavir Phogat lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for scrapping Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

“BJP government did a great work by scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories”, he said.

He also praised Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for a “transparent governance” and for recruiting youth.

The Phogat family hails from Balali village of Dadri. According to multiple reports, Babita could contest from either Badhra or Dadri assembly segments of Dadri district.

Babita Phogat is a bronze medalist at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, and has won gold at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games.
